Governor election map maker
Gubernatorial races are statewide, so a governor map is a 50-state canvas with one color per state. 39 governorships are contested in the 3 November 2026 midterms.
Mapping 39 races on one canvas
Governor maps have a presentation problem that Senate maps do not: not every state votes in the same cycle. A map that colors all 50 states implies 50 races, so it helps to visibly separate the states actually on the ballot from the ones that are not.
Hide the states with no race, or give them a single neutral gray and say so in the legend. Either reads honestly; coloring them by the incumbent party without a note does not.
Party holds, flips and open seats
Governor races are often about change rather than the map, so the categories usually need to carry more than party.
Hold vs flip
Four groups - each party holding, each party gaining - makes the story visible at a glance.
Open seats
A separate category for seats with no incumbent running, which behave differently.

Down to the county
A statewide result is often less interesting than where it came from. Each of the 50 states is available as its own map, and the full county map covers more than 3,000 counties, so a governor map can zoom from national to a single state without switching tools.
