Three thousand counties, one paste

Counties are the hard case for name matching - there are multiple Washington Counties, and several county names repeat across states. Rows that do not match are reported rather than silently dropped, so a mismatch is something you fix rather than a blank patch you notice after publishing.

A caution about county maps

County maps flatter land over people. A sparsely populated county the size of a small state occupies far more of the image than a dense urban county with twenty times the voters, which is why a county map can look lopsided even when the popular vote was close.

That is a property of the geography, not a flaw you can color away - but it is worth a line in the description, and it is a good reason to pair a county map with a margin gradient rather than flat party fills.
